I am curious if anyone is using the XM weather that is now available on the Garmin 396, 496; the Anywhere Map' and other GPS's.  Also some service available on a cellphone, advertised as pilot-cast or something like that.  I'm hoping for the price to drop a bit more, but think that could be pretty handy.  I would appreciate any feedback.

Sorry to not answer your question directly, but as an FYI to everyone, there's a Garmin GPSMap 496 drawing sponsored by Flying Magazine. Head over to www.flyingmag.com. It retails for $2795.

John, I'm only 3+ years late in replying to your post but I use XM weather on my 496 all the time. I would feel like I'm flying blind without it. I have the $30/mo. subscription which is expensive if you don't do too many cross country flights, but I feel it is the no. 1 safety thing I wouldn't be without. A fellow pilot has the more expensive option and he says it tells him what the wind is at different altitudes realtime and saves him enough in gas by flying where the wind is most advantageous to pay for the subscription. I could be wrong but I don't think the subscription will drop in price.

Gentlemen, Please excuse the vague nature of my reply because I do not know all of the ramifications of what I am about to post. Juan de Pedro, a flight instructor at Wings of Wyoming, was just showing me an application that he has on his new "Droid" smart phone that allows him total access to all of the normal weather products through his carrier, which, I believe, was Verizon. As I recall, he had a plan that was costing him about $60 a month, but bear in mind that this is your cell phone as well as e-mail, etc. Quite a bundle! George

As I understand it, one concideration is the delay between real time overlay and present time viewing. The GPS's designed for this function has some delay but it is minimal compared to the APP's weather overlay on the cell phones. Before depending and a cell phone application it would be prudent to investigate the delay time for the posting vs real time of the weather. It is my understanding that some applications can take several minutes to get at current overlay. Fast moving weather could put you in risk with even minutes old information.

Besides the weather overlay another great feature of XM that is well worth the monthly cost is the ability to check the metars of airports enroute to keep up on the wx trends, I would hate to fly x-country with out it. Bob Mosier
